'Johnny Logan should watch out': Kian Egan thinks Nicky Byrne could win the Eurovision

There are rumours the former boyband star will represent Ireland in Stockholm.

Updated 14.03

THERE ARE REPORTS that Nicky Byrne will represent Ireland at the Eurovision song contest this year.

The former Westlife star and 2fm presenter is being tipped to perform in Stockholm, Sweden in May.

Byrne turned to radio after the boyband split in 2012. He co-presents a weekday show with Jenny Greene from 10am to 1pm. Last year he also presented the short-lived TV game show Million Euro Challenge.

The Irish Mirror quotes a source as saying: “Most people will be shocked as he was never the strongest singer in the band but he’s a great performer, he has good stage presence and he’s very likeable so who knows?

It’s just crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s at this stage but Nicky looks set to following in Jedward’s footsteps and singing at the Eurovision.

Last year Molly Sterling failed to reach the final of the competition.

RTÉ has been contacted for comment.

Speaking to Neil Delamere on the Anton Savage Show, Byrne’s former bandmate Egan said, if true, the news is “a great thing for Nicky and a great thing for Ireland”.

I think he’ll represent the country very well. He’s a great singer, a great performer.

Egan added that Byrne could go all the way in the competition, saying: “We might bring the Eurovision back to Ireland. Johnny Logan would want to watch out, Nicky Byrne is hot on his heels.”

Byrne is reportedly working a new album.

His former bandmates Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Brian McFadden have embarked on solo careers, while Egan is a judge on The Voice of Ireland.
