1. #NELSON MANDELA: The South African media have urged its people to let go of their beloved Nelson Mandela today after the ailing 94-year-old spent a second night in hospital with a recurrent pneumonia infection. Officials have not released an update on Mandela’s health since announcing that he was in a “serious but stable” condition yesterday.

2. #CRASH: A man in his sixties was killed when the tractor he was driving left the road and overturned near Miltown Malvay, Co. Clare yesterday evening.

3. #DROWNED: RTÉ News reports this morning that a 36-year-old man drowned at Ballyquirke Lake, near Moycullen in Co Galway yesterday. It is believe the man, who was originally from Poland, was pronounced dead at the scene.

4 #CRECHES: Minister Joan Burton has acknowledged the high cost of childcare in Ireland, and said that questions need to be asked about the privatisation of creches. After watching the RTÉ Prime Time programme, ‘A Breach of Trust’, she was surprised by “the almost total lack of hands-on management”. Her department provides about 200 FETAC training places for people on community employment if they want to build a career in childcare.

5. #JOBS: Deutsche Bank is set to hire 400 new staff and double its Irish workforce as it expands its operations in the IFSC, Dublin, reports the Sunday Business Post.

6. #STATE EXAM JOBS: Instead of hiring unemployed and underemployed teachers as promised, 1,049 retired teachers have been brought back for State exam, superintendent jobs this summer.

7. #KOREA TALKS: North and South Korea held their first official talks for more than two years, in a search for some positive end to months of soaring military tensions. They focused on restoring suspended commercial links, including the Kaesong joint industrial complex that the North effectively shut down in April.

8. #U2 TAX: According to reports in the Irish Independent, rock band U2 contacted the Government after they were annoyed by Social Protection Minister Joan Burton’s speech about the band’s move to Holland for tax reasons.

9. HERO’S WELCOME: A dog that lost half its face saving two girls returned to a hero’s welcome in the Philippines after undergoing a series of operations in the United States. After an 11-hour flight from Los Angeles, Kabang, a two-year-old mongrel, stepped out of her travel kennel to be greeted a large throng of well-wishers.
