A new leader, but most Irish people don't want another election

There’s not much appetite to go back to the polls.

THE MAJORITY OF Irish people don’t want an early general election, regardless of who Fine Gael pick to lead the country.

A Claire Byrne Live/ Amárach Research poll found that 51% of people don’t want to go back to the polls just 15 months after last year’s election.

The poll asked: Do you want an early general election called after Fine Gael members choose their new leader/Taoiseach?

It found that 51% of people said no, while 35% said yes. A further 13% said they don’t know.

The poll, which consists of over 1,000 Irish adults, also asked voters who they thought would get the best deal for Ireland in Brexit negotiations. This was more even, with Leo Varadkar getting 33% of votes, Simon Coveney 32% and 35% saying they don’t know.

A further question asked whether people believed that climate change will pose a serious threat to the world in their lifetime.

57% said yes, 345 said no while 9% weren’t sure.
