Oireachtas agenda: Dáil to debate property tax and banking powers

The Dáil this morning considers extending its emergency banking powers, and debates the Budget’s new property tax.

It’s only the Dáil in business today, with two items on its agenda:

Shortly after 10:30am, the Dáil will debate a motion extending the powers of the Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Act of 2010, legislation brought in by Brian Lenihan which gives the government the power to appoint directors to banking boards, enforce pay caps for new employees, and so on. The legislation, as it currently exists, expires on December 31, 2012 – but Michael Noonan wants an extra two years.
Then, from just before noon, the Dáil debates legislation to introduce the new property tax. This will be debated right up until 6pm, with a half-hour break at 2pm. The legislation needs to be implemented before Christmas because its provisions also include the abolition of the Household Charge, which would otherwise continue in effect from January 1.
