Fascinated by the herd mentality that applauds those of a different perspective being denied the right to express their opinion. My point in posting was to encourage journal.ie (as they have many times in the past) to expand the range of options available in the poll to more fully reflect the range of opinions.

But it appears that when it comes to Team Ireland, disinterest is not an acceptable option.

As you rightly point out we do often extend the range of options to include a ‘don’t know’ or ‘don’t care’ option particularly on important issues concerning politics, the economy and society.

But in this instance the poll is about a fun and hopefully exciting sporting event, a big sporting event, it’s a bit of fun, it’s Friday and so we’re not going to take it too seriously but we’d like to think we all want our athletes to succeed alongside all the other athletes from all the other countries taking part in this great event.

Thanks for the reply and I do appreciate the original spirit and intention of the poll. i guess I was trying to touch on a certain attitude, particularly prevalent in parts of the media, that unless you get behind The Boys in Green in whatever sporting event is occurring that week, you are failing in your duties as a citizen. It is regarded as perfectly acceptable to have no interest in the country’s fortunes in the arts, sciences or other fields of achievement but not to profess an interest and considered view on Irish sporting fortunes is somehow failing in your duty as a member of this society. Which is why I thought another view might be worth reflecting and hopefully, measuring.

I am not and would never suggest that you or anyone else is failing in your duty as a citizen if you don’t “pull on the green jersey” to use that awful phrase.

I appreciate your point and perhaps the poll would have benefited from another option but on this occasion we gave it a miss. As I said, there will be plenty of other polls where such an option is included. Including for ones in sport.
