AROUND 2,500 of London’s emergency service personnel have been involved in a major security exercise today ahead of the Olympic Games this summer.

A number of different training activities are being held today, and the disused Aldwych Tube station in Surrey Street staged a mock terrorist attack on an underground rail station.

The Metropolitan Police said that the test was carried out as though an attack occurred in August during the city’s hosting of the Games. It said that today’s exercise would focus on the tactical response on the ground.

“We need to be confident that we have the right people in the right places, that we understand how others operate and that we are talking to each other at the right levels and in the right way,” said Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison.

“This is part of series of exercises which we have run in the lead up to the Games, but this is the first with such a significant response from the emergency services on the ground.”

  • Keep the sheep in fear? Oh give me a break. I’m living in London and on route to the Olympic Park. I’d prefer if Met Police knew what they were doing instead of having no plan at all. I’m more worried about how to get to work in the morning with all the traffic disruption to be honest,I’m buying myself a bike this summer!

  • There’s also a tinge of ‘keeping the sheep in fear’ in this. It makes controlling them easier because if people are in fear of their and their family’s lives they’ll give the government the mandate to do anything that will keep them safe. Heres an article from Sky News today thats building up the publics ‘War means Safety’ way of thinking:
“A space attack by a hostile country or terrorists could bring down the UK’s power supply and the threat should be taken more seriously, the Ministry of Defence has been told.
They fear a country such as Iran, which has continued a nuclear programme despite international pressure to abandon it, or “non-state actors” could develop the technology required to stage an attack.”

  • “We need to be confident that we have the right people in the right places”, then get the heck out of other countries(Afghanistan for example). Maybe if you didn’t invade everywhere you wouldn’t drive those people to such actions.

Seriously what terrorists do is terrible but with UK and USA, it’s usually because they provoked it.

    • Bit naive there Karl. Remember the bombings in Madrid? Spain didn’t invade anywhere, but fundamentalists didn’t like them being in Iraq so blew innocent commuters to pieces. If countries with the means and resources sit back and don’t get involved on wider world events then the extremists will win. Spain is very must in second tier in world policing affairs, but this proves that any country is at risk, not just the UK and the USA.

@Rebecca Spain didn’t invade but they occupied? Same thing. And are you for real? The terrorists exist precisely because countries with the means interfere with their countries. Not the other way round.

    • @Daniel R, yep, just checked and am for real. There are very few countries who stay out of everything that goes on in the world and if they do in my opinion it’s only due to lack of resources or funds. Ireland are very much involved in keeping factions apart as active UN peacekeepers, but in the future if one of these parties decides to make their grievance more personal to the Irish population then, the emergency services would need to be ready. This is the modern world and as unpleasant as it is, I guarantee there are plans to manage an incident should it happen in Ireland….well at least I hope there are.

  • Is it not a bit odd that they are preparing for a terrorist attack? You’d swear they know something is going to happen
