One arrested after armed robbery in Galway

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a betting shop in Galway – during which staff were threatened with a sawn-off shotgun.

A MAN IN his 20s has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery which occurred at a betting shop in Galway on Wednesday

Gardaí say that a lone raider entered a betting shop in Briarhill Shopping Centre at approximately 4.30pm  armed with a sawn-off shotgun. He demanded cash and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

A 21-year-old man was later arrested and is currently being detained at Mill Street Garda Station under Section 30 Offences against the State Act 1939.

Investigators found the firearm and cash near to the scene of the crime, and a green BMW believed to be associated with the robbery was also located at Ballybrit Heights.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at the Briarhill Shopping Centre between 4pm and 5pm yesterday or at Ballybrit Heights to contact the incident room at Galway 091-538000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
