Pat Rabbitte thinks the Patrick Nulty drunken message scandal 'is a sad affair'

Meanwhile, there are likely to be more revelations about Nulty sending inappropriate messages in the coming hours and days.

COMMUNICATIONS MINISTER Pat Rabbitte has said that his former Labour colleague Patrick Nulty had no alternative but to resign in the wake of revelations about inappropriate messages he sent to a young girl.

Nulty resigned as a TD on Saturday just hours before the Sunday World published details of drunken messages he sent to a 17-year-old girl on Facebook last year.

There are indications that more revelations about inappropriate messages will emerge shortly. The Herald reports today that there are accusations of messages being sent to friends of the schoolgirl who received the message that was the subject of a Sunday World expose yesterday.

Speaking about the controversy today, Rabbitte said that the Dublin West deputy, who quit Labour last year, had no choice but to resign.

“I think it’s a sad affair, but I think he acknowledged his actions were inappropriate and I think it was correct that he decided to resign his seat,” he said.

Nulty has declined to comment any further on the controversy which is reportedly now the subject of a garda investigation.
