PENNEYS HAS FINALLY arrived in the United States with the opening of its first shop this evening.

The retailer, which trades under the name Primark outside of Ireland, opened its doors in Boston today.

Located in the Burnham Building, the 7,150 square metre shop brings almost 600 permanent jobs to the area.

This isn’t the end of Primark dipping its toes in the US market as it plans to open seven more shops. Next on the list is one in Pennsylvania later this year.

The Boston store was opened today by the city’s mayor, who the suitably Irish name of Marty Walsh.

Hundreds streamed into the store.

Walsh told The Associated Press:

“Downtown Crossing was and still is the retail hub for Boston and New England.”

Here you’ll find a cross section of residents, students, tourists, business owners and tech companies. And we’re adding to that each and every day.

Speaking later to The Ray D’Arcy Show on RTÉ Radio 1, Walsh said that the people of Boston “don’t quite get” the craze of Penneys yet, but he said it’s likely to catch on.

But will the phrase “Thanks, Primark”?
