Pfizer to cut 150 jobs at Newbridge plant

The company says Irish operations will not be affected by the move.

Updated at 11.06pm

PFIZER HAS ANNOUNCED that 150 jobs will be cut at their Newbridge manufacturing plant.

There had been fears that between 100 and 150 jobs would be cut, with the announcement now putting that number at the upper end of the scale.

The company will seek the redundancies in 2014 and has announced it will withdraw from packaging operations at the plant in 2015,

The company says that operations in Ireland will not be affected by the move, which comes just as the Newbridge plant was finishing a process that saw one quarter of its staff made redundant.

The redundancies are caused, the company says, by the expiration of patents and competition from generic medicines.

Newbridge has been at the core of manufacturing for Pfizer in Ireland since 1992.
