The discovery was made during an excavation in Edinburgh’s Old Town.

THE GRAVE OF a medieval knight or nobleman has been uncovered at an old city car park in Edinburgh.

The remains were found by archaeologists at the site of a 13th-century monastery. It was also the location of an 18th-century Old High School and 16th-century Royal High School.

According to BBC News, elaborate sandstone slab, with carvings of a Calvary Cross and ornate sword, marked the grave.

The car park was being cleared to build a new centre for carbon innovation. Work was being carried out to create a rainwater harvesting tank when the discovery was made.

Richard Lewis, the City of Edinburgh council culture convener believes the find has the potential to be one of the most significant and exciting in many years. It could provide clues as to what life was like in Medieval Edinburgh.

Headland Archaeology, which found the remains, says it is looking forward to post-excavation analysis.
