Poll: Are celebrities too thin-skinned?

Darron Gibson may have quit Twitter over the volume of abuse – but should celebs on the site expect negative comments?

MANCHESTER UNITED and Republic of Ireland footballer Darron Gibson became the subject of a Twitter storm yesterday when he joined the site at lunchtime – only to delete his account within a couple of hours, amid torrents of abuse.

Ryan Tubridy has previously spoken about how he is affected by critical comments about the Late Late Show, while glamour model Imogen Thomas – currently the subject of a superinjunction over an affair with a footballer – yesterday said she would be “dead by now” if name-calling on Twitter could kill.

The events have shown how social media can put celebrities in the firing line – and sparked debate about whether public figures can do themselves more harm than good by making themselves into a potential target for abuse.

Do you think celebrities on Twitter should be expected to put up with criticism and abuse?

Poll Results:

Here are the Tweets that made Darron Gibson quit Twitter within two hours (or did they?) >

  • Once again, we have the percentage of people who thinks it’s ok to be an asshole to someone for no reason because they have a keyboard and anonymity. I despair that their lives are so empty that they have nothing better to do than troll celebrities.

  • Criticism IS ok, what if someone asks their fans their opinions on a new song or something, and receive constructive criticism, like there being too much or too little of a certain thing…? It would do a greater disservice to do nothing but heap praise on them, “Emperor’s new clothes” style, but of course harassment and cyber bullying is wrong.

  • 43 people actually said that it is ok to critise and abuse… Unbelievable!
No matter how much someone gets paid, bullying and abuse is wrong!
    Stop with your begrudgery.

Criticism is ok, bullying and insults are not.
Why be mean to someone for no reason other than he has made a better life for himself than you. Some sad eejits out there!!

  • I don’t think the subject is the simple to just have 3 options for the poll. These ‘celebrity’s’ have no problem selling their story and putting themselves in the public eye yet when its turned on them they don’t like it. I don’t agree that it leaves them open to be insulted or verbally abused but if they don’t like being talked about stay at home. For example if Ms Thomas doesn’t like being talked about don’t have an affair with a married man. (I also understand that it takes two people to have an affair)

They earn enough to take the flack…pretty sure Imogen Thomas isn’t so rich these days, it’s been a while since her BB stint!
