A proposed bill from Deputy Anne Ferris would introduce a voluntary system of retirement.

A VOLUNTARY SYSTEM of retirement would replace the current compulsory retirement age of 65, if a new bill is passed by government.

The bill from Deputy Anne Ferris would amend the Employment Equality Act 1998 and would abolish the compulsory retirement age currently in place for public servants.

This would see Ireland following a similar path to the United Kingdom and United States.

Ferris’ bill would mean that employees would be able to make their minds up about when they retire – once they have passed the age of 65.
