Poll: Do you agree with the European ruling that ends cheaper car insurance for women?

Insurance companies can no longer offer women a discount for safer driving. Let us know what you think.

THE EUROPEAN COURT of Justice ruled yesterday that insurance companies can no longer offer cheaper car insurance to women, on the grounds that it is discriminatory to calculate risk factors based on gender.

Do you agree with the decision to end the practice of cheaper insurance for women? Or do you think women should be rewarded for safer driving? Or do you think the insurance for both sexes should be reduced instead?

Do you agree with the ruling?

  • The only winners here are the insurance companies.

Men might think hooray but in the end of it your wife / girfriend / mothers insurance will only go up and the days of getting your girlfriend on your policy as name driver to make it cheaper will probably go.
The only way this could be good if ALL insurance goes down or the ruling for this is that mens insurance lowers, which it won’t.
They want you to THINK it’s a case o Andy Gray in reverse

  • It has always upset me that this was allowed – if it was the other way around it would have been thrown out years ago.

  • Now, when are they going to lower the premiums for younger drivers? This is age discrimination.

  • Women want fair wages men should get fair car insurance

    • I’m glad to note you said ‘women want fair wages’ which recognises they haven’t got them yet and that it is fair.
I’m okay with men wanting equality in insurance premiums. Just feel they should get it when women have equality with men in the all the areas they are discriminated against. I believe in equality.
I note too that this has been stamped on really quickly, while we have been asking for equality for over a hundred years, everyone agrees it is fair but it doesn’t happen.
Perhaps you guys who are so happy about the outcome of this could shout out on all the other issues of inequality which favour them over women. We would appreciate your support!

  • I think it should be cheaper for all. It’s terrible that is has been allowed and I’m glad to see this decision made BUT I hope the Irish insurers don’t take this as an opportunity to raise everyone’s insurance, they are greedy enough as it is.

  • Insurance profit margins are far too high. They charge on the basis of risk and I agree with this but the prices they actually charge suggest the projected cost of an accident. Is everyone in the country going to crash in the same day/ week/ month/ year!? Its ludicrous to think that this new ruling will make insurance cheaper. The insurance companies will always strive to maintain their margins. The cost will merely transferred to other customers. As for it actually being discriminatory to offer women cheaper car insurance, its based on completely ignoring statistics.

  • This will only mean that women’s premiums will go up, while men’s will stay as high as ever. This way nobody will get cheaper car insurance. The only winners are, as usual, the insurers!

  • wow ! only 28% believe it should be reduced for both. And we wonder why we are where we are?

    • Clearly, common sense should dictate that insurance premia should relate to risk, and statistically, young men are more of a risk. Companies will have to find a way around this ruling, otherwise careful drivers (including women) will pay disproportionatley.
