Poll: Should there be mandatory minimum sentences for assaulting a garda?

New figures show assaults on gardaí are on the rise.

NEWLY RELEASED FIGURES have shown a steady rise in the number of assaults against gardaí over the past decade.

The figures show that 631 officers were injured in the line of duty last year, compared to 390 in 2005, a rise of 60%.

The figures have prompted the president of the  Garda Representative Association (GRA) Ciarán O’Neill to call for a number of measures to be introduced to help curb the numbers.

Among these, O’Neill called for “mandatory minimum sentences” for anyone who assaulted a member of the frontline emergency services.

So, what do you think: Should there be mandatory minimum sentences for assaulting a garda?
