Definitely yes. It would normalize our unique and threatened national language which was actively suppressed by our rulers. Our language heritage is marginalized and forgotten to many could be revitalized with such small measures. We can’t let the bad experience of its poor teaching punish our ancestors heritage. It would only be short clips so people with anaphylactic reactions won’t sufffer long.

Surely that depends on the overall strategy for Irish. If we are to promote the language then yes, if we was to discontinue the language then No. the fact that you need it for 3rd level access in Ireland it would make sense to try and make it more commonplace.

I really don’t get it. The Catalan citizens being harrassed and beaten for trying to retain their culture and heritage, and here we are throwing ours away. It must have something to do with the dilution of tribal Gaelic blood, and of course , the usual element of extreme laziness. Úfasach.

If Irish was seen and heard more often on RTÉ, then people would become more familiar with Irish and understand it more and it would encourage more people to talk Irish.

I think it is a marvelous idea.

On another note, does anyone think that it was weird of the Irish state, through its agency the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, to grant a broadcasting licence to UTV but had no obligation to broadcast in the Irish language even though the first official language of the state is Irish and UTV Ireland broadcast into Gaeltacht areas? Why would Irish viewers need another wannabe British channel when viewers already have hundreds of such channels? And then people wonder why the Irish language is so weak. Unfortunately when TV3 bought UTV Ireland it was not obliged by the BAI to broadcast any show in Irish.

The problem with that is a very small demographic would understand it. Irish needs to be properly taught and spoken from a young age. Geal Scoils need to be the norm and not the exception. Then yes, more Irish please.

I went to a Gaelscoil and used to be fluent but I just can’t see any point in the language any more. No one wants to speak it. There are far more Polish speakers in Ireland than gaelgoirs nowadays. They employ translators in the EU and in the Irish Government to translate documents into Irish that no one will ever read. What a waste of money.

The hypocrisy over the Irish language is symptomatic of the self-deception at the heart of our national life-almost NOBODY understands enough for daily use, so stop pretending they do and wasting resources like tv airtime to facilitate the deceit. I recall my primary schooling, in which more time was dedicated to this pointless subject than any other, and I haven’t got a focal, practically. TG4 and Irish language radio are more than enough, stop force-feeding the rest of us, it amounts to abuse by an elitist cult-mind you, you could say that about all aspects of our national life!

If I remember correctly “Amuigh Faoin Spéir” managed to intermingle Irish and English in such a way that nothing was lost to a viewer with only one language. I really miss this format and it would be well worth considering for some reports. But then maybe RTE news should focus on more Irish local stories and use this format for them. The big international news is already shoved in our faces with on line social and media sites and posts and pages………..

The Irish are speaking English due to centuries of subjugation by the Normans. The yoke was only cast off a century ago, and only partially as some counties in the north are under UK rule. Meanwhile the English language has expanded across the globe. With air travel (navigation and communications are all in English) and with Ireland’s welcoming of US companies to manufacture and trade in Ireland the English language has become the norm.

It’s up to the Irish to determine if they are willing to preserve their language. Believe it or not there are Irish Heritage Centers and groups in America regularly teaching the Irish language. None of that is funded by the US government.

I commend Joe McHugh for trying to come up with ideas to bring Irish centre-stage for the wider public, but this isn’t a good idea. First, if reports in Irish were brought into the ‘main’ news bulletins, then that brings Nuacht RTÉ’s TV/radio slots into question, and reduce the need for Irish-language reporters/journalists. It could end up making (more of a) piecemeal out of Irish-language journalism on RTÉ, a department that has been fragile throughout the years. Second, RTÉ has seriously upped their game towards news coverage in Irish in recent years, especially online. English speakers can ignore those services easily enough, and leave them to the Gaeilgeoir or learner to enjoy. Focus on developing services for the deaf instead, maybe.

If he’s that bothered about it…just don’t produce the report in English anymore and them they’ll have to use subtitles (or maybe it just won’t get shown).

I don’t know 1 person well who can speak fluent Irish…it’s sad but unfortunately there’s just no use for it anymore other than providing some places in the country where many teens go to get their first shift :)

I’m a proud Irish person but I don’t speak much Gailge, what I find annoying is a number of good documentary’s on RTE1 that are in Irish with English subtitles, if it’s on RTE have it in English, if it’s in Irish put it on TG4, what’s the point of an Irish language dedicated station if thereis Irish programs on RTE channels.

If reports in the Irish language are presented in the national daily news on English language TV and Radio, then there should be reciprocity in having reports in the English language presented on Irish language TV and radio.

But in truth, I prefer to hear reports in the Irish language on Irish language TV and radio news and reports in the English language on English language TV and radio news. It requires just a flick of the switch!!!
