Poll: Were RTÉ wrong in banning this Budweiser ad featuring Conor McGregor?

RTÉ has refused to air the ad as it is in breach of advertising standards.

NEWS EMERGED TODAY that a TV advert for Budweiser featuring Irish UFC champion Conor McGregor has been banned by RTÉ.

The Sunday Business Post reports that the reason given by the state broadcaster for refusing to broadcast the advert is that it is in breach of advertising regulations, which prohibit the marketing of alcohol towards children by the use of “heroes of the young”. RTÉ believe that McGregor, one of the most popular sportsmen in the world at present, could fall under this label.

The advert is part of Budweiser’s ‘Dream Big’ campaign, while McGregor does not actually touch or ingest any alcohol over the course of the 40-second spot. You can view it here.

Budweiser has defended its actions, saying the advert was pre-approved by an advertising vetting service, and that it is proud to have McGregor as its ambassador.

But do you think RTÉ has a point? Or are the regulations too strict?

Please note, the poll categories below were changed briefly earlier today which may lead to a slight skewing of the results, our apologies for any confusion created
