Poll: Should suicide ideation clause be removed from Bill?

The issue will be one major question debated today as Oireachtas committee considers Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013.

FOLLOWING YESTERDAY’S FIRST Dáil vote through of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013, the proposed legislation will today continue to be debated at committee level.

While amendments can be suggested by the Health committee – which consists of a cross-party selection of TDs and senators – it is not considered likely that the clause that allows for terminations in cases of a woman expressing suicidal intentions will be removed.

That hasn’t stopped a number of TDs and – just this morning – the Master of the Rotunda Dr Sam Coulter Smith from warning that the clause could create more problems than it solves. The issue will dominate committee discussions this morning which you can view here.

What do you think? Would you like the clause allowing terminations in suicide ideation cases (which is subject to the judgement of three doctors) to be removed from the Bill?

Poll Results:

No, it should stay (2404)
I don't know (1211)
Yes, it should be removed (1081)
