Poll: Should all jobseekers be paid social welfare payments electronically?

The Government is unsure if the move would save money, but it’s looking into it.

THE DEPARTMENT OF Social Protection is looking into how much money it would save by processing all social welfare payments for jobseekers electronically.

The issue was raised by TD Michael McNamara, who asked if money could be saved if all jobseekers received payments through electronic fund transfers.

Minister Joan Burton said that the department is conscious of the need to ensure that fraud controls are not diminished. It’s now seeking to reassess and evaluate the risks.

But it is unsure if paying social welfare electronically will result in a saving.

Further concerns may include the impact that electronic payments could have on An Post, which normally processes the payments.
