Poll: Will you pay the household charge?

The €100 annual household charge is on the way but some say they won’t pay it. What will you do?

THE GOVERNMENT IS set to introduce a €100 charge on every household in the country in next week’s Budget in order to raise much-needed revenue.

A debate on the legislation that will introduce the charge has been delayed but it is anticipated that when it is passed through the Dáil the charge will see around €160 million in new revenue raised to boost government coffers.

According to the Irish Examiner, the government has indicated the charge will come into effect next year and people will be allowed to pay on a quarterly basis, dividing payments into four instalments of €25. The charge is a joint tax on property and domestic water use as part of the bailout agreement with the EU and IMF.

Although it is much lower than first anticipated, those against it fear it will be increased in the years to come. Already, some TDs from the United Left Alliance have organised a campaign against paying the charge.

So today we’re asking whether or not you will actually pay the €100 household charge when it comes into effect?

Poll Results:

No (1897)
Yes, but reluctantly (1381)
Not sure (426)
Yes, absolutely - it is a necessary tax (398)
