Poster Watch: They're supposed to be DOWN by now - are there any near you?

Any candidate who still has one up faces a €150 fine from their local authority from today.

ELECTION POSTERS ARE supposed to be down by now.

Any candidate who still has one up faces a €150 fine from their local authority.

Legislation requires that all political posters be taken down within seven days of polling day – meaning candidates had until midnight to remove them.

Here’s the official advice from the Department of the Environment:

Posters (including the plastic cable ties) must be removed within 7 days of polling day. These requirements for election posters are set out under section 19 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997 and the Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 2009.

Councils are responsible for issuing on-the-spot fines to candidates whose election materials stay in place. They are also responsible for removing posters that pose a hazard to either pedestrians or road users.

Local authorities in Dublin issued over 90 fines to candidates in the 2014 local and European elections who did not remove their posters by the deadline.

Complaints about such posters can be made directly to the appropriate council.

If you spot a poster at a location near you, let us know: tips@thejournal.ie
