Hundreds of homes without power after wicked winds

Properties in Dublin, Galway, Longford, Waterford, Clare and Limerick have been affected.

HUNDREDS OF HOMES across the country lost power overnight as the damaging and gusty winds predicted by Met Éireann landed.

Clusters of faults and subsequent power outages were reported in Limerick, Clare, Galway, Longford and Dublin as gusts brought down trees and power lines.

ESB Networks has said it is working to repair the faults to restore power as quickly as possible. However, some properties in Leixlip, county Kildare and Sutton, county Dublin may be without electricity until after 3pm today.

The supply problems come after a night of strong winds, which are likely to continue this morning. Heavy rains are also expected in the west and north but they should clear later this morning.

The weather folk at Met Éireann have lifted the wind warning issued yesterday, however a gale warning and small craft alert remain in place.

Data: ESB Networks. Crosses and pins indicate a cluster of faults.

AA Roadwatch has urged all drivers to be patient with road users as today will be “very busy” across the country.

The PSNI have said that there are a number of trees down across Northern Ireland, with many roads closed. Gardaí have also asked for motorists to exercise caution.

Trees are also down in Mayo, Longford, Donegal and Cavan. AA Roadwatch also said to watch out for “fallen debris”.
