Stormy Weather

Thousands of homes without electricity tonight

High winds have knocked out power to homes across the country.

THE ESB IS working to restore power to around 5,000 households across the country after high winds knocked out electricity in parts of the country.

Met Éireann had warned that gale force winds were expected this evening and so it has unfolded: There are now two wind warnings in place and a gale warning for all coasts and on the Irish Sea.

The two wind warnings:

Wind Warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork and Kerry:
Strong to gale force southerly winds will gust 110 to 130 km/h today and for a time tonight.
Valid: 28 Dec 2012 – 15:00 to 28 Dec 2012 – 23:00

Wind Warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan,
Roscommon, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford:
Strong to gale force southerly winds will gust 90 to 115 km/h today.
Valid: 28 Dec 2012 – 12:00 to 28 Dec 2012 – 21:00

You can check on power cuts by phoning 1850 372999 or on the Power Check app or the website (Although this is obviously only useful if you have battery power stored in your laptop/smartphone/PC/tablet).

AA Roadwatch is reporting fallen trees on roads in Mayo, Westmeath and Sligo – see here for updates. Feel free to leave notes in our comments section if there is a particular danger or road obstruction in your area.
