Number of homes without power halved after day of ‘good progress’

25,000 homes are likely to remain without power over night, but 35,000 homes saw the lights come back on today.

Updated at 8.55pm

CLOSE TO 245,000 homes have seen their power restored since Wednesday’s storm, ESB Networks said this evening.

A day of “good progress” due to improved weather conditions allowed crews to restore power to 35,000 households.

However, 25,000 are likely to remain in the dark overnight.

“The improved weather conditions have helped crews today, however ground conditions are still extremely bad with many areas completely waterlogged, so access is still very difficult,” said Paul Mulvaney, Customer Services Manager with ESB.

“We are doing everything humanly possible to make our way through the work.”

It is a hard grind, but we are making progress and we’ll keep going until everyone has their power back

He said that progress will appear to slow tomorrow, as the numbers associated with each fault drops.

Customers without power should check for updates here or telephone 1850 372 999 and have their MPRN available to access recorded information specific to their location.

Earlier this afternoon, a 65-year-old man died while working with an eircom subcontractor to erect a telephone pole.

The gardaí and Health and Safety Authority will both carry out investigations into the man’s death.
