The reason history is so off putting is the not unlike Irish it is taught all wrong. History is a story ..it shouldn’t be a series of dates to learn like formulas in maths.
It should be taught as themes ..
An example — Famous pacifists and their efforts – A chapter on Jesus, Ghandi Michael Davitt etc.
A chapter on social heroes – James Connolly, Martin luther king, Nelson Mandela
Nations and bigotry should be taken out of it ! Lenin and James Connolly versus Hitler and Stalin ..that is how to learn from history !

Every History teacher in the country can attest to hearing the Dreaded Question at least once a year: “What’s the point in learning about this?”

People should not comment on what happens inside a classroom when they obviously do not have a clue! Just because people were once students, some with bad experiences, seems to make them experts and clouds their opinions of modern teaching. I’d love if people could come into my class, everything from role-plays, documentaries, TV, making their own news reports are used. And this is throughout all subjects in the school. We have moved on from learning dates and ruler thumping. Go comment on what you know about.
