I can see now why FG don’t want to see more reasonable prices for houses/apts….or have anything to do with rent control.

Well, seeing as about 70-80% of irish people own their own homes – and another few percent bought an apartment as an investment – TDs probably reflect the Irish people – ie lots of property owners who want the price of their investment to rise?

David….70-80% of Irish people own their own homes because…they need a home. The reason most buy a home is for security because they do not want to be at the mercy of an unregulated rent market.
I bought my home like most people because I needed somewhere to live….I like my home and regardless of the market I intend to live in it and not sell, that would be true of most Irish people.
I’m sure all those people who invested in property for the future are upset that their investment was a bad move…but for most Irish people owning property is just owning their own home and nothing else.

Well if you were making 87,000 a year you would have money to invest – and property is a reasonable investment.

I don’t know what percentage of irish people own an investment property – but it’s probably significant – given our obsession with property. So i’m not sure that TDs are that different from other people with very well paid jobs.

Have you been asleep for the last few years……property investment hasn’t really turned out as a reasonable investment….has it?
Our obsession with property has little to do with investment and more to do with security in a market with no rent control.
