As Talleyrand said “Treason is a matter of dates”. Like it or not public opinion only supported the Rising retrospectively. It was opposed to it until the executions. I say that as a supporter of the Rising. As for Redmond he had a mandate for Home Rule not independence. I think he was deluded to take such a prominent role in recruitment for WW1. On the other hand in 1916 there had not been a rebellion for 50 years.
