My story speaks against such single gender schools : my family is catholic, and my mother decided that I would go to the catholic school for girls until my leaving cert .. which I did ! Then suddenly I became student in medicine far from home (300 kms!!!) .. imagine a little bit how much inadequate I felt discovering at 17 yrs of age that there was an other gender (I have no sibling!)… For several years I have been very unhappy and unsecure and that is not at all what parents want .. not even mine who were sure that being in a school only for girls I would be more secure .. but it was exactly the opposite

Can any of us genuinely argue that separating girls and boys in schools is a practice worth defending, asks Aodhán Ó Ríordáin.

@Andre le Flohic: Could it not be said that perhaps you got enough points for Medicine because of the fact that you were in a single sex classroom? Studies do suggest that girls fair out worse than boys in such environments. That said, if you were going to go off the rails at all, probably better while at school under the watch of your parents than 300km away and costing your parents or the State the cost of a university education.

I hope things work/ed out for you in the end.

@Brian Lenehan: Even if it was the case, getting ‘enough points for Medicine because of the fact that you were in a single sex classroom ‘ is a high price to pay for social backwardness.
