Denito, don’t forget that extra hour off council staff get each week so they can go cash their pay cheques….oh wait…they’ve not been paid by cheque for years…but they still get that hour off fully paid.

Handy number if you can get it,

I said it before I say it again. Sometimes you need to invest to accumulate. Stop paying 500 million in foreign aid a year would help bigtime. That would sort the public wage issue for a good while. They are two examples of hundreds of ways .

Our Civil Service needs to be cut drastically.

Our frontline Public Service needs investment.

    Big difference.

Well ireland has to borrow to pay 500 million for foreign aid so yes take it away. We paid when we had lots of money which I agree with but not now. 500 million is a huge burden the irish have to pay.

@ Sussana – WTF? Stop trying to ‘jack a thread.

@Itiswhatitis – we invest over €9Billion into the economy every year. This is unsustainable. We need real cuts (I agree with you on the foreign aid) and to bring everyone into the tax brackets.

Denito, food aid doesn’t work. In places where food aid is sent to it often destroys the local food industry. How can a farmer compete with free food? Or how can a clothing industry compete with free donated clothes? It encourages people in the area to give up working because they will just get what they need for free.

Charity is something that we do because it makes us feel like we’re making a difference when we’re doing the complete opposite.

Problem with our investment is there is no benefit relaization money is not carefully spent to get max benefit.

There is no evidence to show so far with all the governments job strategies that any money invested has generated jobs.
There is no evidence to show per million how many jobs created or saved.

It is like throwing money into a black hole and hoping something might pop out the other side.

Jason, nail, head, hit. The truth is often simple however, stopping foreign aid deprives certain members of political society from overseas jollies and being acclaimed as good people by the talking heads. And….foreign aid budgets don’t administer themselves.

agreed. Think twice people, when you think your fair trade coffee which makes you feel smug and better than us regular coffee drinkers. Subsidies destroy people. Look at the european agricultural policy, can’t take it away now because of generations of farmers of subsidies so fat they’d just drop dead if we took a bit of it away.

Foreign aid is a joke when your own country is at the bottom of the ocean.

Did you copy this straight from the British government policy on the Irish Famine?
