THE SAME QANTAS PILOT and crew who were on board a flight which suffered an engine explosion on Thursday were also on board when flames engulfed a second Qantas plane’s engine.

Captain Richard Champion de Crespigny and 20 of his crew were passengers on the Qantas Boeing 747 which was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off from Singapore, according to the Daily Telegraph.

De Crespigny had successfully landed an Airbus A380 jet on Thursday after one of its engines exploded soon after taking off from that same airport.

The airline subsequently grounded all of its A380 planes pending further investigation.

The Airbus incident has knocked over £1bn from the value of Rolls-Royce, which manufactures the engines, according to the Telegraph.

Shares dropped by 33p on Thursday after the chief executive of Qantas, Irishman Alan Joyce, said his airline belived the engine failure was likely the result of “a material failure or some sort of design issue”.

Shares dropped a further 30p yesterday.

Rolls-Royce has asked all airlines using the Trent900 on A380 jets to conduct certain safety checks.

Qantas, which celebrates its 90th anniversary as Australia’s national carrier on 16 November, has published an updated list of changes to scheduled services on its website.
