This is what reading looks like when you have dyslexia

A developer has created code to show non-dyslexic users what reading is like with it.

IT AFFECTS READING, writing, spelling and speaking but properly describing dyslexia to someone who isn’t affected by it can be difficult to convey without witnessing it.

One developer Victor Widell decided to take the description from one of his friends who has dyslexia and visualise it.

Using Javascript, the code can be applied to any site by going to Github, but there is one website ready-made so you can gain an idea as to how the condition affects reading.

“A friend who has dyslexia described to me how she experiences reading. She can read, but it takes a lot of concentration and the letters seem to ‘jump around’,” he explained. “I remembered reading about Typoglycemia. Wouldn’t it be possible to do it interactively on a website with Javascript?”.

Whether people feel this is an accurate reflection of the condition is up to debate. One user on Reddit who has dyslexia said while it’s accurate ”this is a more extreme case”.

To the people saying this isn’t what dyslexic people see… DUH! Nothing will ever show you normals exactly how it truly feels to read while dyslexic. But this is damn close! The point is to give you normals a little taste of the struggle we have to endure, especially as a kid trying to learn how to read!
