Budget 2014: 455 extra resource teaching posts announced

The National Council for Special Education said the new positions brings this year’s allocation to more than 5,700.

THE NATIONAL COUNCIL for Special Education (NCSE) has announced 455 extra resource teaching posts this year as a result of Budget 2014 allocations.

The new positions have been created to meet the increase in demand for supports.

The total allocation for this school year has now jumped to more than 5,700 in about 3,750 primary and post-primary schools.

“The NCSE is delighted that additional posts have been made available in the budget to meet increased demand for support despite the difficult economic times,” said NCSE chief Teresa Griffin.

The role of the resource teacher is to provide “additional teaching capacity” to mainstream primary and post-primary schools with pupils with special educational needs.

Schools can see their individual allocations on the body’s website from today.
