Revenue seizes 60,000 cigarettes, 11,000 litres of alcohol

The seizures took place in Co Louth today as part of an operation with the gardaí. The cigarettes have a retail value of €282,000.

The officers from Revenue’s Customs Service seized the cigarettes and alcohol in Rathgorey, Co Louth as part of an operation with an Garda Síochána.

Customs officers uncovered 11 intermediate bulk containers of pure alcohol along with pumps and filtration equipment at a commercial shed in the rural area. They said the alcohol has a potential loss to the exchequer of approximately €416,000.

The 600,000 ’Brendal’ brand cigarettes, meanwhile, have a retail value of €282,000 and a potential loss to the exchequer of  €211,000.

Revenue said that investigations are ongoing. They also noted that if businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone 1800 295 295.
