1. #ROADS: A man in his 70s has died following a road collision in Limerick yesterday afternoon. A second man is in critical condition at he Mid-Western Regional Hospital and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

2. #FLAG: As protests over the flying of the Union flag in Belfast continued last night, ten PSNI officers were injured in clashes with demonstrators. This morning the PSNI said two males, aged 23 and 16 were charged with rioting in connection with disturbances in East Belfast last night.

3. #VOMITING BUG: Visitor restrictions remain in place at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick today as the hospital attempts to contain the spread of the winter vomiting bug, the Irish Times reports. The number of reported cases in the last week of December fell to 29.

4. #CREDIT CARDS: Under a new EU consumer protection directive, the government is expected to crack down on handling charges imposed on airline and concert ticket purchases, the Irish Examiner reports. The directive will be transposed into law by the end of this year but does not have to be applied until June of 2014.

5. #CONGRESS: A new US Congress opened for business yesterday with Republican House Speaker John Boehner re-elected to his post despite a mini-revolt in party ranks over the fiscal cliff. Curbing the US’s runaway national debt, and reforming immigration law, are some of the main points on the 113th Congress’s agenda.

6. #CHAVEZ: Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez is said to be suffering from ‘respiratory insufficiency’ as he battles cancer and a severe lung infection. Chavez’s top aides have accused opposition and the media of using his poor health to wage a “psychological war” to destabilise the country.

7. SYRIA: At least nine people have been killed by a car bomb at a petrol station in Damascus, BBC reports. The bombing follows an attack in which dozens of people were killed in an air strike on another petrol station in the city.

8. #VOLUNTEERING: There was a 16 per cent increase in the number of volunteers who signed up to Volunteer Ireland and local volunteer centres around the country in 2012. In total, around 465,550 hours were clocked up by volunteers who gave up their time to help in areas like arts, culture and media; health and disability; and youth and children.

9. #FIFTY SHADES: Figures from Nielsen show that El James’ three Fifty Shades books topped Ireland’s best sellers list in 2012, followed by the late Maeve Binchy’s ‘A Week in Winter’ and Jamie Oliver’s ’15-Minute Meals’, the Irish Independent reports. Mary O’Rourke’s memoir ‘Just Mary’ made it to number 7 on the list earning €363,599 in sales last year.
