Phone use now permitted during “all phases” of Ryanair flights. Aer Lingus? Not yet

The budget airline’s move follows a ruling from the European safety aviation agency last November.

THAT ‘PLEASE TURN off your mobile’ warning will be a thing of the past from today — at least if you’re flying on Ryanair.

The budget airline has announced that all customers may now use portable electronic devices on all flights, for the entire duration of the flight (that includes tablets, smartphones, e-readers and MP3 players).

The devices will have to be switched to ‘flight mode’ and carrier’s stressing that passengers will still need to listen to “all safety demos/briefings” regarding their use.

It follows a ruling from the European Aviation Safety Agency in November of last year, approving the use of such devices during take-off and landing.

That decision followed on from a similar one in the US earlier last year.

According to a statement from Ryanair:

“The IAA [Irish Aviation Authority] is one of the first regulatory authorities in the world to approve this measure and we wish to commend them for their initiative.

“We are working hard to improve our service to all customers and today’s PED approval is the latest in a series of changes which we know our customers will love.”

Aer Lingus say they’re not ready to make a similar announcement just yet. According to a spokesperson:

“We are at an advanced stage of our approvals process regarding the use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) and will be announcing a change to the policy shortly.”
