IT HAS BEEN a 24 hours to remember for Dublin actress Saoirse Ronan.

The star, who first came to prominence when nominated for an Oscar as a 13-year-old in 2007′s Atonement, has won both a prestigious award and been listed as one of the world’s young people worth watching.

In New York last night Ronan was awarded Best Actress for her role in drama Brooklyn, a movie that is likely to bring her another Academy Award nomination, by the New York Film Critics Circle.

The actress will find out whether Brooklyn is to bring her her second nomination on Friday when the awards shortlists are due for release.

Brooklyn concerns the travails of a young Wexford woman emigrating to the New York borough in the 1950s. Ronan herself was born in New York, and lived in the Bronx until she was three.

When presented with the award by Liam Neeson she gave a brief speech thanking the Critics Circle, and mentioning that as a native New Yorker she is known as ‘Saoirse from the Block’ by her fellow actors.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old actress has been named as one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 on the Hollywood scene – that is 30 people to watch aged under 30 years.

Forbes, which famously runs an annual rich list of the world’s wealthiest people, names Ronan in some illustrious company, including Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson and current Star Wars denizens Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.

The list describes Ronan as having “set critics fluttering” with her performance in Brooklyn.

Not a bad day’s work all in all.
