1. #SEAN DUNNE: The Sean Dunne bankruptcy saga rumbles on after Ulster Bank intervened in proceedings in the US. RTÉ News reports that the bank has claimed that Dunne filed for bankruptcy in the US to avoid bankruptcy rules in Ireland and they want the Irish proceedings to go ahead,
2. #US TRAIN: A rush-hour collision between two commuter trains in a suburb north of New York City Friday injured 60 passengers, five of them seriously. Metro North, which carries around 280,000 passengers each day, said the cause of the crash is not yet known.
3. #DIESEL LAUNDERING: Custom officers have discovered a sophisticated diesel-laundering operation in an industrial estate in Blanchardstown, Dublin. The operation was at a €1.75 million loss to the exchequer.
4. #ABORTION: The government is likely to face pressure to modify the proposed legislation for abortion after the Master of the Rotunda expressed concerns about the suicide clause, reports The Irish Times. Meanwhile, here is the 12 interesting moments from the Oireachtas abortion hearings.
5. #PUBLIC PAY: Fifty-five staff under the remit of the Department of Education and Skills earn more than the Taoiseach. Data published by education minister Ruairí Quinn shows that a significant number of staff – assumed to be employed at the country’s universities and institutes of technology – earn over €200,000 a year.
6. #FRANCE: France became the 14th country to legalise same-sex marriage today after President Francois Hollande signed the measure into law following months of bitter political debate.
7. #SHOOTING MASSACRE: A novel by Irish author Colum McCann has been selected to help surviving students overcome the grief and trauma they suffered after a gunman killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut on 14 December. McCann said the selection of ‘Let the Great World Spin’ was “possibly the greatest honour of my life.”
8. #JAPAN: A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan’s main Honshu island earlier, seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage.
9. #FLYING NUN: A 75-year-old nun made a parachute jump to raise money for Aware and other charities yesterday. Sr Patricia Wall, who made the skydive in Galway, has so far raised around €25,000.
