POLICE IN NORTHERN Ireland have confirmed that they are examining a power-pack that they suspect may have been a part of an intended car-bomb attack in Belfast.
The PSNI has closed off the Antrim Road in north Belfast for two days so far, forcing about 50 families living in the areas have to stay away from their homes. It is suspected that the dissident republican group, Óglaigh na hÉireann is responsible for the planned attack, RTÉ reports.
Meanwhile, there have been two more alerts in Co Antrim: a viable pipe bomb was found on Ballymena Road in Carnlough and a suspicious object was also found at The Roddens in Larne. However, the latter device was later confirmed to be a hoax.
The BBC quotes SDLP assembly member Alban Maginness, who said: “People are enraged by what has happened and they’re outraged by the fact this bomb had lain there for at least 24 hours if not longer”.
“Its main purpose was not to destroy property, but to kill people and kill police in particular – that is an attack on the whole community.”
