Nearly half of Irish adults would sell unwanted gifts online - survey

And almost one in four say they have done.

ONE IN FOUR Irish adults have sold unwanted gifts online in order to make some extra cash according to a new survey.

The survey of over 1,000 Irish adults nationwide, commissioned by DoneDeal.ie, has found that selling unwanted gifts online is becoming increasingly popular with 24 per cent of those surveyed saying that they have already done so in the past.

Men and women are equally likely to sell unwanted presents but younger people are more likely than older people to do it, the survey found.

Over a quarter of people in Leinster have sold unwanted gifts online – 26 per cent – with exactly a quarter doing it in Munster. Twenty-two per cent in Connacht and 22 per cent in Ulster say they have sold gifts online.

Forty-one per cent of those surveyed by the Amárach Research said they would likely sell their unwanted presents online in the future in order to make money.

Again the age profile of those more willing to do it was younger with older people less enthusiastic about it but still nearly half of those aged 55 and over (48 per cent) saying they would do it.

Other findings were that 58 per cent of those surveyed would now consider buying second hand gifts online in order to save money in the future.

Young people are most likely to consider buying second hand presents online, with a substantial 69 per cent of those under 25 saying they would do it to save money.
