Why did Shirley Bassey's singing interrupt Morning Ireland's 7am news bulletin?

The Welsh vocalist’s distinct tones interrupted Brian Jennings as he was reading the news on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland earlier today.

THOSE GETTING OUT of bed and switching on the radio this morning for the lastest news headlines may have been a bit surprised to hear Shirley Bassey interrupt details of the latest events in Syria.

Newsreader Brian Jennings was bringing us the latest on the 7am news bulletin on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland when all of sudden a clip of Bassey singing interrupted proceedings.

The clip lasted some 30 seconds before it was cut off and a shocked Jennings apologised to listeners admitting he had no idea what had happened.

A few minutes later the Morning Ireland Twitter account labelled it “one of the most bizarre things that has ever happened”:

A short time later it tweeted: “Re #ShirleyBassey, we had breakthrough from another studio. Apologies again. Back to normal service now!”

Thankfully Twitter was mostly unperturbed by the interruption with one wondering whether the rest of the song would be played after 8am:

There was no repeat of Bassey’s singing during the 8am bulletin with Morning Ireland presenter Gavin Jennings describing the earlier incident lightheartedly as not an ‘omnishambles’.
