These incredible images are up for awards in the world's biggest photography competition

THE SHORTLIST FOR the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards has been released.

The world’s biggest photography competition had 230,103 entries in total across all categories, an annual increase of 28%.

The contest has three main categories – professional, open and youth – which each have several subcategories, such as current affairs, daily life and portraits.

Here is a selection of some images shortlisted in the professional category.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 21 April. They will share a $30,000 (about €27,000) cash prize and receive digital imaging equipment.
