Poll: Do you know the warning signs of meningitis?

The northeast has seen an apparent outbreak of the illness.

IT’S EVERY PARENT’S worst nightmare, but thankfully meningitis is a rare occurrence.

There were just 102 cases in Ireland of meningitis last year, and over 85 per cent of these were viral, which according to Mayo Clinic is considered the less dangerous form and is rarely life-threatening.

Bacterial meningitis, which spreads quickly and can be far more harmful, accounted for 15 instances in total last year.

A recent outbreak of bacterial meningitis in Meath has put parents and doctors on high alert, with several children hospitalised, and one fatality.

Signs and symptoms of the condition can be found here. If you are worried about your child’s rash, HSE have provided a guide for parents.

So, tell us: Do you know the warning signs of meningitis?

Poll Results:

Yes, I've read up on them (182)
No, not really (109)
I'm not sure (57)
