Six journalists arrested in fresh phone hacking probe

Three men and three women are being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to intercept phone messages.

POLICE IN LONDON have arrested six journalists as part of an investigation into the incidence of phone hacking by media personnel.

Detectives say they have identified a further suspected conspiracy by a number of employees at the now defunct News of the World newspaper to intercept telephone voicemails during 2005 and 2006.

In a statement, Metropolitan Police said it is separate from the alleged conspiracy already being investigated by Operation Weeting, for which a number of people have been charged.

Some of those detained today as part of the new line of inquiry are still working in the media. Police signalled that the fresh inquiry will lead to new victims. They said contact will be made with those people believed to have been targeted.

Three men, aged between 39 and 46 years old, were detained in the Greenwich and Wandsworth areas of London, while one woman was arrested in Chesire. The youngest suspect is a 33-year-old woman who was arrested in Islington. A 40-year-old woman was also arrested in Lambeth, London.

They are being interviewed at various police stations in London and Cheshire and searches are being carried out at a number of addresses.
