Woman prevented from having 'Skywalker' on passport makes official complaint

Laura Matthews originally changed her name to Skywalker for “a bit of a laugh”.

A WOMAN IN the UK who attempted to have ‘Skywalker’ added to her passport as a middle name has asked for an apology from the British officials.

Laura ‘Skywalker’ Matthews has made a number of complaints about the difficulties she has had with the British passport office.

The 30-year-old from Southend in Essex attempted to have the name of the Star Wars character added to her passport in July 2014 after originally changing her name by deed poll in 2008 for “a bit of a laugh”, according to the BBC.

This was the start of an ordeal for Matthews that saw her prevented from traveling as she was unable to update her documents.

Back in 2014 the passport office told her that her signature ‘L Skywalker’ infringed on trademark, and therefore it was against their policy to issue a passport.

The passport office then changed their mind and said they would allow it, before changing back again and saying the passport issued to Matthews was invalid.

She was eventually required to change her name back to Laura Elizabeth Matthews to allow to acquire the document.

In a statement today, the British Home office has said: “We are giving Miss Matthews’ complaint proper consideration and regret this has taken longer than hoped. This is being progressed and we are looking to provide a full response at the earliest opportunity.”
