Sober Ireland: What can you do in Ireland without drinking?

There are things to do. Honestly.

THE MOST FREQUENT lament of those that don’t drink is that there is little to do that doesn’t involve drinking.

The centre of most Irish towns is a hive of pubs and clubs and for people who don’t drink, that space can seem like something of a no-go area.

However, there are places you can go to have a laugh if you’re on the dry.

Obviously, there are the staples: playing sport, going to a gym, pool, bowling and classes. Beyond that, here are some examples.

Morning Gloryville

Morning Gloryville is a morning rave. Yes, when you’re struggling through your commute, these people are giving it loads.

Morning Gloryville describes itself as “a huge heap of fun, a necessary injection of good positive energy into humdrum city morning culture”.

They say that they want to change the face of such events generally.

“We believe in the transformative power of dance, sobriety and embodied practice.”

Funky Seomra

The Funky Seomra is a club night that doesn’t do alcohol. They say that in three and a half years, there has not been an unsavoury incident.

According to the organisers:

“Some people attend to take a break from the Dublin nightclub scene which can be centered around alcohol consumption, others come who are in recovery from addiction, others never drank, some just love the atmosphere and music. It is a very unique night out in Ireland.”

No Name Club

The No Name Club is a a national voluntary youth organisation with clubs throughout the country.

No Name Clubs are run by and for young people aged 15 years and who come together in a safe and lively environments where there’s fun, friendship and enjoyment without the pressure of alcohol or other drugs.

The organisation was founded to provide an alternative to pub culture for young people and the organisers say the clubs “demonstrate a lifestyle in which the use of alcohol or drugs is seen as unnecessary to the enjoyment of a happy, cheerful and fulfilling social life for young people”.
