SIX SPECIAL OLYMPIANS will be the Grand Marshals of Limerick’s St Patrick’s Day parade next week.
The parade is planned to be the biggest in the city’s history, with organisers expecting more than 4,000 participants and 70,000 spectators.
The six athletes, including Limerick basketball player Christine Delaney, form part of Team Munster who will be competing in the Special Olympics later this year.
1,500 athletes are expected to attend the games in Limerick this June.
‘It is a great honour for our athletes to be nominated as Grand Marshals for this year’s parade,” CEO of the games Matt English said in a statement today.
“There is great excitement among everyone associated with Special Olympics Ireland that the 2014 Games are returning once again to Limerick in June. ”
I have no doubt that with the support of the people of Limerick these Games will be a fantastic success and a positive experience for all involved.
The city will host the games as part of its designation as National City of Culture 2014.
