Specially constructed jackets used to conceal duty-free cigarettes

Another cigarettes seizure was also made in Sligo with a retail value in excess of €6,100.

FOUR LITHUANIAN NATIONALS were arrested yesterday after being stopped and searched in Dublin Airport where it was discovered they had concealed cigarettes with a retail value of €13,300 in specially constructed jackets.

Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service seized 28,000 cigarettes which have a potential loss to the Exchequer of €10,213.

Lithuanian nationals 

The “L&M” brand cigarettes were discovered when two males, aged 19 and 47, and two females, aged 24 and 45, arrived in on a flight from Kaunas, Lithuania.

They were all searched and the cigarettes were found concealed in hand luggage and the specially constructed jackets that the two males were wearing.

The four Lithuanian nationals were arrested and appeared at the Criminal Courts of Justice yesterday evening where they were remanded in custody by Judge Conal Gibbons.

They are due to appear again at the Criminal Courts of Justice tomorrow.

Sligo

In a separate seizure, 14,000 duty free cigarettes, with an estimated retail value in excess of €6,100 and a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €5,000 were discovered in Sligo last night.

In an intelligence-led operation targeting the importation, sale and supply of illegal cigarettes in the Sligo area, officers from Revenue’s Customs Service last night seized the ”L&M Red” cigarettes which were found concealed in a bulk cargo vessel which had arrived into Sligo Port from Poland.
