THE STATUE OF Liberty has been evacuated after smoke was discovered around a lift inside the monument. The fire department attended the scene, but no further details have been reported. The Statue was closed to the public due to security concerns after 9/11. The base was reopened in 2004, and the crown was reopened last year.
