A Clare family lost their home and two pet dogs in the storms

The O’Connor family will feature in tonight’s Nationwide Storm Special.

STORMS HAVE BATTERED Ireland’s coastline this January, causing millions of euro in damage.

Galway, Clare and Waterford are among the worst hit areas.

Tonight’s RTÉ Nationwide programme will interview the families affected by the damage.

The home of John O’Connor and his family in Quilty, west Clare was destroyed and they are now living with relatives, too scared to go back to the house in case it would happen again.

It’s a living nightmare to tell you the truth…the kids aren’t sleeping they are so upset…my wife and I cannot sleep with worry.

Both of the family dogs kept by the O’Connors perished in the floods during the storms.

“I cannot see a future here at the moment….simple as that,” concluded O’Connor.

Yesterday, Clare County Council announced that it will begin interim flood defence works along 800 metres of the coastline in the area. However, the rock and sand bags in the vulnerable areas will only offer a temporary solution.

There are similar concerns in Carrigaholt on the Loop Head Peninsula, which has been described by local post master Pat Gavin as a “living hell”. Current, the access route to a number of homes and landowners remains cut off by floodwaters. The only way through has been the reopening of an old bog road.

Here’s a look at some of the areas – including Tramore, Duncannon and Mullaghmore – that Nationwide will visit this evening:
