6 ways streaming has changed your social life

“Can I mute you?”

WE’RE ALL A bit spoiled rotten these days, aren’t we?

God be with the days of rushing home to catch an episode of your favourite telly programme – that only aired once, and just once a week – or panicking over trying to set the VHS recorder.

Now we have unlimited streaming, always-on access to our favourite shows, and we don’t know we’re born. Here’s how it’s changed us.

1. The subterfuge

Lying to your pals about going to Thursday night drinks in the pub – and why? Because you have important family plans*, of course. Yes, yes – simply can’t be missed.

2. Bonding opportunities

There are some people in your life that you are bound to make small talk with – think colleagues in the office lift, or your sister’s new fella. Well, streaming has completely revamped what previously would have been a damp conversation about the weather. But now – both watch Doctor Who? Conversation sorted.

3. First dates: rebooted

Think there might be a spark between you and a mate? Invite them over for some ‘friendly’ streaming of TV or movies. If you don’t make your move watching a scary film at home alone, then when will you?

4. Next Episode Syndrome

Red eyes in the morning, little bit grouchy, preoccupied expression… All the signs are there. You’ve got Next Episode Syndrome. All that telly on demand has led to 4am being your habitual bedtime. Tsk.

5. The long haul

People in long-term relationships have been given a new bone of contention – and breeding ground for bonding, equally – in the guise of easily-accessed streaming TV. Watch an episode ahead of your beloved and hide it from them, or wait to watch it together? A battle for the ages.

6. Enhanced lazy weekends

Once upon a time, people had to wheel out to the cinema to catch the films they wanted to see, or learn rocket science in order to set their video recorder. These days, the toughest parts of your days off work involve making sure your pillow fort balances properly.
